Scary Machine

For the last couple of weeks the breast pump I bought has been sitting in our entry area intimidating me. I took it out the box, looked at all the pieces, read the instruction manual and promptly put it back in the box. This past weekend I was determined to tackle it. Jace and I went to a new mom’s group on Friday and several of the other girls expressed that they had similar fears but that once you start to use it, you figure it out and get used to the idea of being a cow hooked up to a milking machine. So Sunday night (well really the wee hours of Monday morning, I took the bull by its horns (or the machine by its parts) and gave it a shot. Not the most elegant piece of equipment but it did the job and I didn’t end up with pieces of me missing.

Last night Steve got to give Jace his first bottle. It was a little traumatic for him (both hims, I imagine) at first but Jace eventually got the hang of it and devoured the whole 4 oz bottle. We will try again tonight.

You know, if you have a good double pump, you can prop everything up, hold it with one arm, and read a good book while you’re hooked up. It’s not *quite* “me time”, but it’ll do in a pinch:)

Congratulations!!!
We have had such poor success with our kids and the bottle. Andrew did fine since we started him young, like you did, but the others just want nothing to do with it, whether from me or Daddy or Grandma.
Good for you!

I’ve got *lots* of pumping info if you’re short any! There are also a couple hands free options for pumping – a halter and a bustier, as well bras. Just Goodsearch it. I recommend against Medela’s version, though that’s what I wound up having to use. Good online spot is the Yahoo group Pumpmoms.

Hmm. Maybe I’ll have to look for a hands-free pumping option if I go back to work. Thanks for the tips, folks. Heather, reading your blog cracks me up because I had the exact same experience about being intimidated by the pump. :)

Congrats on conquering this particular mommy-ing aspect! :) I second ‘leen, I would get myself going, and then hold my left arm across both of the attachments to keep them in place, and would type one-handed, mouse, write…. Of course, I also held meetings while pumping, because I didn’t get an office of my own until a month after Kate turned a year old and drank milk during the day, so I would pump in my boss’ office and those would be our daily meetings. But that’s probably a peculiar benefit of working in an Ob/Gyn office with a boss who has 3 kids and I in fact even lent her my pump for her 3rd (in between of Sophie and Kate).
