Solid? Food

Tonight Jace got to try solid food for the first time. Why the question mark in the title? Well, the food wasn’t exactly solid. I followed the directions on the rice cereal box for baby’s first meal and it was basically breastmilk with a little rice texture. Very, very liquidy. So Jace basically slurped milk off a spoon.

Things we learned:

1. Feeding piglets is a messy job (not so surprising!)

2. Next time use a little less milk

3. Plastic bibs might be great with solid food but with liquid the stuff just hangs out there. We ended up adding a cloth bib over the top so it would absorb the spills and keep him dry.

4. Giving your child an extra spoon to hold onto in the hopes of distracting them from grabbing onto the spoon with the food on it is silly. Jace just shoved the extra spoon in his mouth so there was no room for the spoon with the food on it!

5. Jace wasn’t really sure what he thought of the whole thing.

Less milk *might* help, but if you leave it out long enough (which is not long at all) the enzymes in the milk will start to break down the cereal and you have the liquid, anyway – just thought you should know!

Yeah, the ratio on the package is nuts…we use O Organics Rice Cereal, and it said, “for baby’s first feeding use 1 tbsp cereal to 3-4 tbsp milk” I thought that was a little off, so we started with a 1:1 ratio and that even seemed runny for a first feed, so we thickened it the next day and it was much better for all involved. We now do 1:2 milk:cereal ratio and that seems perfect for RJ now.

In other news – we have the same model high chair, only ours is red! So we had almost the same due date, bought a crib on the same day, AND have the same high chair, over 3000 miles apart!

oh yeah, and welcome to the world of even grosser baby poo. It starts to have an odor and get chunkier right away. No more nice breastmilk poo.
